National Science Week 2008

CLI Events

Stargazing-looking to the stars

This ground-breaking event held on 20 August 2008 featured:

  • Dr Fred Watson, Astronomer-in-charge at the Anglo-Australian Observatory at Coonabarabran and author of Stargazer– the life and times of the telescope and Why is Uranus Upside Down?
  • Professor David Malin a pioneer of new techniques for astro-photography and the photographer responsible for many of the images used by NASA.

These two world-renowned experts conversed with students and teachers using the videoconferencing facilities provided by the NSW government’s Connected Classrooms initiative, about stars, galaxies, telescopes and all things astronomical.

Skeptical Science

This exciting and provocative science event with Dr Michael Shermer, a high profile international scientist and author of books on scepticism, evolution and psychology, was held on 22 August 2008. Dr Shermer describes himself as a skeptic who is on a crusade against junk science, bad science and plain old nonsense.

Dr Shermer engaged students in a presentation on Darwin and the theory of evolution. He tackled topics such as the logical faults behind intelligent design and issues around climate change.

You can enjoy both of these events through the Parents and Community section of the Teaching and Learning exchange (TaLe).
